The Pebble Partnership has a strong track record for maximizing project benefits in Alaska. As a result of a successful 'local hire' policy and worksite training program, 106 local people were employed at Pebble in 2009. More than 60 percent of employees and consultants who worked on the project last year were Alaskan.
In 2008, the Partnership established the Pebble Fund — a five-year, $5 million endowment to enhance fisheries, sustain local communities and create much needed community infrastructure in southwest Alaska. Through 2009, the Pebble Fund contributed $1.6 million towards community support, leveraging nearly $10 million in additional matching funds.
The Pebble Project is also forging strong commercial relationships with local businesses. Iliamna Development Corporation, Pedro Bay Corporation, Alaska Peninsula Corporation and Kijik Corporation are all local Native Corporations with which the Partnership has established partner relationships.
Finally, the Pebble Partnership has undertaken extensive stakeholder outreach and relationship building in recent years. In response, 18 Native tribes, corporations and other institutions in southwest Alaska have passed resolutions supporting the Pebble Partnership's efforts to advance through the permitting process and to design an environmentally sound and socially responsible project.
In future, the Pebble Partnership will continue to forge partnerships with local people through investments in workforce development, business development, community grants, stakeholder education and outreach.
